A battery that has not been subjected to warm temperatures or allowed to remain in a fully discharged state for more than a few days and has always been 'topped-up' rather than fully discharged every time, should last 2.5 to 4 years. However, at the end of this period, the battery will probably only last half as long as it did when it was new, or even less.

Always keep notebooks and tablet PCs as cool as possible and store at about 60% charge level or more. A battery kept at 42 degrees Celsius in direct sunlight will deteriorate much faster than one kept at 25 degrees Celsius in a cool room. For instance, even if you do not use the battery, if it is stored fully charged for one year at 40 degrees Celsius it will only have a 65% capacity at the end of that year. That is, after one year it will only last 65% as long as it did when it was new! However, if you store it at a 40% charge level at 35 degrees Celsius or less for one year, it will have a 97% capacity by the end of the year - i.e. as good as new!

When replacing all cells, the rating is less important as long as the differences are not too large for the charger to handle. Cells with higher Ah will simply take a bit longer to charge.  The state-of-charge of all cells being charged for the first time should have a similar charge level, and the open-circuit voltages should be within 10 percent of each other

Energy storage in a battery can conceptually be divided into three imaginary segments of the available energy, the empty zonethat can be refilled, and the unusable part(rock content). Figure 1 illustrates these three sections.

Part of the problem lies in the difficulty of testing batteries at the consumer level, and this applies to storefronts and service garages alike. Battery rapid-test methods seem to dwell in medieval times, and this is especially evident when comparing advancements made on other fronts. We don’t even have a reliable method to estimate state-of-charge — most of such measurements using voltage and coulomb counting are guesswork. Assessing capacity, the most reliable health indicator of a battery, dwells far behind.

But this does not apply to lithium cells - only for nickel based. In truth, fully discharging your lithium battery often can be harmful to its battery's health, possibly making it completely unusable if levels go too low.

Despite the above comments there are some manufacturers who make cells designated as Lithium polymer which actually contain a liquid or a gel. Such cells are more prone to swelling than genuine solid polymer cells.

The operating performance of the cell can also be be "tuned" by changing the identity of the transition metal. This allows the voltage as well as the specific capacity of these active materials to be regulated. Cell voltages in the range 2.1 to 5 Volts are possible.
