A knowedge of the SOC is particularly important for large Lithium batteries. Of all the common cell chemistries Lithium is the most chemically reactive and the only one which needs electronic battery management systems (BMS) to keep the battery within a safe operating window and to ensure a long cycle life. Control of the SOC is a major function of the BMS. Furthermore, automotive applications, one of the main uses of large Lithium batteries, need very precise control of the SOC for efficient and safe management of the energy flows.

So much for theory, I want to show you some real data. I borrowed a friend's Apple PowerBook G4, installed Debian GNU/Linux and the Linux 2.6.6 kernel and then did some experiments. I wanted to estimate the maximum gain in battery life and the time we needed between spinups to come close to that maximum. I expected a pretty large gain, because the laptop was equipped with a power-hungry 5,400 rpm drive and because I stripped the system of the X server and all d?mons. I wrote a benchmark program that always performs the same amount of disk I/O per hour, but with a configurable inactive period between I/O bursts. During inactive periods, the benchmark program spins down the hard drive. I ran the benchmark with a number of inactive period lengths, and I used the APM battery information to calculate the expected battery life.

Simple Guidelines for Storing Batteries
1, Primary batteries store well. Alkaline and primary lithium batteries can be stored for 10 years with moderate loss capacity.
2, Remove battery from the equipment and store in a dry and cool place.
3, Avoid freezing. Batteries freeze more easily if in discharged state.
4, Charge lead acid before storing and monitor the voltage or specific gravity frequently; apply a boost if below 2.10V/cell or an SG below 1.225.
5, Nickel-based batteries can be stored for five years and longer, even at zero voltage; prime before use.
