Recent developments have produced a range of new environmentally friendly cathode active materials based on Lithiated transition metal phosphates for Lithium-ion applications.

Lithium-Ion batteries have a finite life, they slowly degrade from the day they are first made. The life of the battery will depend upon how you charge and discharge the battery and, in particular, the temperature at which the battery is kept. A manufacturer will rate a Notebook battery to the point where it holds 50% of its original capacity. At this point you should consider replacing the battery.

Heat is the worst enemy of a battery. When charging, allow plenty of air to circulate around the Notebook/Tablet PC, so that the battery is kept as cool as possible and also when in use. If provided, use the integral 'legs' under the Notebook to raise the notebook and improve air circulation.

Lithium Sulphur is a high energy density chemistry, significantly higher than Lithium-ion metal oxide chemistries. This chemistry is under joint development by several companies but it is not yet commercially available. Lithium Sulphur cells are tolerant of over-voltages. The cell voltage is 2.1 Volts

If a battery only lasts a few minutes, even though it is fully charged, this may be because it is no longer accepting charge. This can happen when a fully discharged battery is stored for several months. For this reason always charge your batteries to a least 50% charge if you are not going to recharge them for a few months. Once Lithium-Ion batteries have become fully discharged they cannot be recharged by normal methods. It is best to remove the battery if you know it is not going to be used for a month or more. Modern notebooks still drain the battery slightly even when they are turned off.

Schools that use NoteBuses, enclosed trolleys, or cupboards to keep and charge their Notebooks, often place the AC adaptor directly on top of, under or adjacent to the Notebook. This is very harmful to the Notebook battery because the AC adaptors get quite hot during charging and this heat can seriously damage the Lithium-Ion batteries. Always ensure that you keep the AC adaptors well away from the Notebooks during charging and as near to any ventilation slots as possible.

A battery that has gone out of calibration may, for example, show 90% charge remaining when there is, in fact, less charge actually remaining. This may show itself when a notebook suddenly powers down while it reports a reasonable percentage of capacity still remaining. Alternatively, the ASUS K53U battery power meter may show hardly any charge remaining after only say 1.5 hours of use, but the battery is only six months old, was fully charged and used to last much longer a few months previously.
